Patio Furniture Saturday, May 9 2009

We had wicker patio furniture that rotted.
Lately, we’ve been on the hunt for some “new” vintage metal patio furniture.
We didn’t want to spend a lot of money, so we’ve been looking around at flea markets and yard sales.
A few weekends ago, we found the cutest vintage patio set at a junk shop down in North Carolina.
It was covered in rust and who knows what but we thought it had a cool design on it.
We got it for a verrrry good price and after Dad sanded off the rust, we spray painted it black.
Now it looks brand new.

Strawberries! Saturday, Mar 21 2009

dsc_00303berryWe’ve been very busy with gardening lately.
Yesterday, Dad bought us 3 vintage strawberry planters and today he bought us GORGEOUS strawberry plants at the flea market.
Daddy was extra nice and even helped us to plant the strawberries (they were difficult to get through the openings of the pot).
The plants already had large strawberries growing.
Hopefully,  they will stay happy & healthy!

A New Garden Path Saturday, Mar 21 2009

Lately, the backyard has been giving us a headache…we’ve been trying to figure out what to do back there.
We decided that we want a garden path put down leading to what will be an “English cottage garden architectural salvage window bench” piece (it’ll make sense when we blog about it later…as in when Dad and Owen build it).
We have TONS of rocks all over our property which was perfect for creating the path.
Owen hauled the rocks for us and Dad made the path for us (in his usual professional manner).

To the right of the path we’ve decided to plant different varieties of hostas, ferns, fairy lilies, and other shade plants.
As soon as there’s no more chance for a frost, we’ll get to planting.

Turtle RIP Friday, Feb 13 2009

Sad news.
Ok…so we bought this WAY cute moss covered cement turtle statue thing last year from Old Time Pottery.
It was SO cute!
Sadly, the other day while we were taking a turn around the backyard, we found turtle dead.
Orange dead.

dsc_0090Ewwwww!
Turtle has orange insides!
What is this madness?!
We like tuttles.
Turtle RIP.

The Black Gate Friday, Feb 13 2009

We’re calling this post “The Black Gate” …and we don’t mean to Mordor.
That would be a bad day.

Daddy surprised us this week by purchasing a black fence and gate for the “cottage garden”.
It matches the black fencing that we put in the back yard.
We’ve begged Dad for the last two years to take down that nasty white vinyl floppy over fence in the cottage garden.
He listened.
It looks SO good! Of course, it won’t look way good until the gardens are blooming.
Thankfully, our menfolk put up this new fence when the plants are not in bloom – otherwise…our flowers may not have survived.

You Can’t Clean Nature With Nature! Sunday, Nov 23 2008

The name of this blog post is a quote from one of our favorite episodes of Monk! LOL! Don’t ask!
Anyways…here’s some pictures of “nature”.
All these shots below (minus the one of the deer) were taken on our property….if you call 3/4 of an acre “property” but whatever.
img_5296bunnyHere is one of the cute little bunnies that show up in the springtime.
Thankfully, we haven’t noticed them ever eating our gardens.

resizesquirrel21This is “Charlie” the squirrel. He isn’t scared of us at all.
He lets us get within a few feet of him and then acts like “ok ok! I’ll run off now if you insist”.
He looooves to hang upside down from the Dogwood tree and gorge on birdseed.
He is a pig-squirrel for sure.

resizesquirrel1Sometimes he falls.
Poor Charlie.

deery47This picture wasn’t taken at our house but a few miles up the road.
This year we’ve seen quite a few deer in our neighborhood.
Sometimes they run up our driveway and into the neighbors yard.
One day Ariel and I were out for our 2 mile walk (like alllllll uphill too ….whatever) we were about to go up the steepest part of the road (which the neighbors rightly call Buttbuster Hill) a huge doe came running at us and then jumped off the cliff of the road (we know we sound stupid but that’s the only way to describe it…trust us). Oh dear we sound so blonde…moving on….

owl14646465
This is Augustus the Owl.
He is a whopper.
We named him after a character from Jeeves and Wooster (which we love to read and watch) who collects newts.  Ariel gets credit for naming this one because that is just weird.
He lives in an old tree across the street from us. He came up close to the house a few times and Ariel spotted him bathing in the creek across the street.

Pictures of the Courtyard Monday, Sep 29 2008

A couple of months ago, Aunt Judy (Mom’s sister) came to visit. While she was here she was astounded to discover that out of our extensive garden tool collection, we did not own a hoe.  This fact so disturbed her that during a routine trip to Wal Mart, she snuck away from us; returning with a hoe.
The next morning we woke up to the sight of Aunt Judy hoeing (don’t know if that’s a word) up every last weed in the courtyard!  It was wonderful. Inspirational. Divine. She left the hoe behind and we are hoping that she will be pleased to know that we have put it to good use! Weeds everywhere fear for their lives when they see us coming!  Here are some of the pictures of the courtyard (before and after). Please remember this is only the beginning of a big project. We will be filling in with TONS of plants over the next few years (hopefully things will grow a bunch and be very pretty by next spring).

Above is the before and after of the entrance to the courtyard.
Next year we should have some beautiful blue hydrangeas (these have already doubled in size since we planted them).

This is from 2007…a before shot of the courtyard area.

150 bags of pea gravel later….
Don’t worry! We are not going for a gravel driveway look!
We promise it will be totally filled in with plants within the next few years.
The pea gravel simply helps with drainage and weed control.

Above is one of our favorite plants – an Oak Leaf Hydrangea.
Next to it is a $2 yard sale find (a Victorian iron garden chair that weighs a TON).

One of 3 Elephant Ear plants (this variety is a perennial) planted in the courtyard.

A few weeks ago Dad bought us two of these vintage concrete planters at a yard sale.

grapehyacynth

This is not a weed coming up but rather a Grape Hyacinth.
We planted about 100 of these bulbs a few months ago, not expecting to see them grow this year.
Within two days of putting down the pea gravel they all started popping up!

This is another picture from 2007.
There were Galiath size Hostas taking over the patio walkway by the back door.
We transplanted those monstrous puppies (they weighed a zillion pounds each! We had to roll them across the driveway because they were so heavy!) to the cottage garden.
Within the next year we are planning on replacing the plastic white fence (that doesn’t clean easily!) with black iron fencing to match the backyard fence.

This is another “in progress” picture.
Dad hopes to eventually put down sod.
We planted some Knock Out Roses along the fence.
They have more than tripled in size since we planted them last year.
We found this heavy as lead concrete picnic table on Ebay for only $35 in Roanoke.
When Dad said we could bid on it and that he would go pick it up for us…he underestimated just how heavy it is! Somehow he fit all those pieces into his minivan and hauled them home for us.
It took the whole family (except of course Grandma!)  to unload the set and get it into place.

Hopefully, we will have many more pictures to  post of the courtyard next spring.
Special thanks goes to Aunt Judy for teaching us how to use a hoe!

Our Favorite Flowers Wednesday, Jul 16 2008

These are a few of our favorite flowers around our yard.
Be sure to read our very helpful flower purchasing tips at the bottom of the post.

Above is a view of the backyard from the front of the house.

Ariel found this Rose Campion at a local farmer’s market.
It is one of our new favorites!

This is the courtyard.

This was a crusty almost dead plant that we got for next to nothing at Lowes.
It is called Vinca something (Adri can’t remember).

This is an annual that came back!

This is our family’s favorite Dogwood tree on our property.
This is a shot of it blooming in the spring.

We can’t remember the name of these, but they are a lovely trailing annual.

We have Calla Lilies, Day Lilies, and Princess Lilies all around the bird bath.

Closeup of the Princess Lilies. These are more “dead” plants that we got for a song at Lowes.
We think they came back to life nicely!

We can’t remember the name of this perennial.

Another flea market find.

We finally filled the window box on the kitchen window.
More of our “dead” flowers (impatiens).

This critter is a Clear Wing Hummingbird (some call it a moth) that resembles a bee.
They aren’t at all skittish, making it easy to get great photos of them.
He loves this butterfly bush!

We LOVE Moss Rose! It is a trailing annual that is easy to find at places like Lowes.

This is from one of our many Hydrangeas.
Owen gets all the credit for taking these lovely photos!

How to go about buying lots of plants when Dad says he can’t afford to buy a lot of plants:
Go to your local Lowes, wander around the garden center and be shocked at all the high prices.
Next, go to the verrrrry back of the garden center (back where they sell fencing), there you should find a “dead plant cart” (sometimes many of them…if it’s your lucky day…oops we’re Presbyterian – we mean blessed).
You will be surprised that many of the plants only need light pruning and some water.
This next part is crucial, so pay close attention.
Find a Lowe’s worker (male is best; male manager even better).
Ask him sweetly, “how much are those crispy flowers in the way back?”.
Now smile winsomely.
Let him think for a minute. Keep smiling (we don’t mean flirting).
Then he should say (at least it works for us), “Come on back and I’ll make ya’ll a deal”.
Follow him and remain silent while he ponders the new asking price.
Try VERY hard not to squeal with delight as he tells you the price.
Rather do like Ariel and say in a quiet voice, “Aw! You’re so nice!”.
Last time she did this, he reduced the price he originally gave us, by half.
Then wait for him to leave you, so that you can make your selection.
We like to each fill up the largest pulley carts we can find (you know, those huge ones for manly construction projects?!).

Another good tip for buying:

Most people are aware that you can purchase flowers at farmer’s markets, but that can be pricey (remember Daddy has you on a budget).
We have found our dollar goes MUCH farther at flea markets and yard sales.
Dad got us into this kind of flowering shopping, when he brought us home a bunch of .50 cent flowers!
Besides all this, the selection is much more varied because the vendors usually bring in flowers from their own established gardens. The elderly people usually have the best selection and prices.
Happy shopping!

The Moss Saga Thursday, Jul 10 2008

OK…..we LOVE to tease Owen and try and trick him occasionally. Usually he is way too smart for us.
HOWEVER, a few months ago he tricked himself and all we had to do was just sit back and watch.
Last year, Ariel read an article in a magazine about how to grow moss and take care of it.
One of the tips (from the “Mossologist” in the article…and YES she did call herself that!) is to put buttermilk all over the moss because it nourishes it (Adri thinks this is debatable…but if Ariel wants to do this then…ok).
So in 2007, Ariel tried out this “tip” and it seemed to work pretty well.
This year, Ariel went to town with it! She dumped it ALL OVER our moss covered rock wall in the back yard.
Here is what it looks like after an “bath”.
So we went back inside after Ariel buttermilked the wall.
We weren’t even thinking about moss anymore…just dinner.
All of a sudden, Owen comes BURSTING through the back door yelling “GIRLS! Come look at this! I was in the back a minute ago and the wall looked normal…and then I went back out like 2 seconds ago and it’s covered in BIRD POOP!!!”.
He really did say it just like that.
So we decided to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. So we winked at each other and played along for as long as we could without laughing. The best thing is that this wasn’t planned as a joke at all! This was just Ariel “gardening”.
Owen must have thought he was in an Alfred Hitchcock movie.
What we want to know is what kind of birds could be responsible for THAT?! Eagles? Vultures? Pterodactyl?

Here is some moss after a buttermilk treatment.

Oompa Loompas Monday, Jul 7 2008

Poor Dad! After numerous (and horrible) bouts of poison ivy Dad bought some gear to tackle our ivy problem.
We have ivy EVERYWHERE at this house. On trees, walls, hills, bushes, etc.
Owen geared up too. We’re not sure what inspired his costume…maybe we don’t want to know.
Dad’s outfit brought to mind but one thing: Oompa Loompas!

Dad gave permission to post THE picture:
